The Islands are also visited by scholars (who are often artists) courtesty of the Shackleton Scholarship Fund. This prestigious fund was established in 1995 to commemorate, in perpetuity, the lives of Sir Ernest Shackelton and Lord (Edward) Shackleton, and is designed to stimulate human endeavour, initiative and research. To date, the fund has awarded more than £400,000 to 90 scholars from fields as diverse as penguin biology and sponge biodiversity, to child development training and karate instruction.
