Discovery Falklands

PROFILE: Tony Smith is the owner/operator of Discovery Falklands, with 15 years experience guiding tourists, television crews, photographers, battlefield enthusiasts, and 1982 veterans to prime wildlife and historical sites around the Falklands (registered since 1992).

Example tours include:

Battlefield Sites (30 minutes drive from Stanley)
This area includes the battlefields of Mount Longdon, Wireless Ridge, Mt Tumbledown, Mt Harriet and the Two Sisters.  Walk through the old Argentine positions and see remnants of equipment used in 1982.

Bull Point (approximately 4.5 hours drive from Stanley)
The extreme South of East Falkland has both natural beauty and an abundance of wildlife; including Gentoo & Magellanic penguins, Sea Lions, ducks and wading birds - this is a location where unusual birds are often spotted. As well as wildlife you will experience beautiful, white sand beaches and some of the nicest wildflowers and plants in the Falklands. Due to the distance from Stanley it is usually necessary to stay overnight to make a visit to Bull Point worthwhile.  Contact Tony directly for full details.

Cape Bougainville (approximately 2.5 hours drive from Stanley)
This is a very scenic part of the North Coast where you can see a thousand plus Rockhopper Penguins, also usually small numbers of Macaroni Penguins and Sea Lions.  On windy days Albatross and other sea birds swoop offshore. This area is part of Salvador Farm owned and run by five generations of the Pitaluga family.

Cape Pembroke and Gypsy Cove (1 hour tour by vehicle)
Both of these sites are situated within short driving distance of Stanley and offer easy access to Magellanic Penguins, Night Herons and Porpoises. Visit the old lighthouse at Cape Pembroke, a superb area for viewing sea birds set along a rugged coastline with beautiful white sand beaches.

Darwin & Goose Green (approximately 2 hours drive from Stanley)
Darwin & Goose Green are both areas of early historical interest and sit amid a 300,000 acre farm.  This area is also home to several 1982 memorials and a key battlefield. Excellent food and accommodation is always available at Darwin Lodge.

Elephant Beach (approximately 3 hours drive from Stanley)
This is another different but equally interesting part of  the northern coastline of East Falkland where you can see small numbers of Sea Lions in a photographic location.  There are also Gentoo & Magellanic penguins, many small birds and ducks, and occasionally birds of prey.  This driving tour takes a circular route from the Elephant Beach farm, which can also be visited if desired.

Port Louis (approximately 1 hour drive from Stanley)
Port Louis is an area of great historical interest, offering a fascinating number of stories from its earliest settlement in 1764 onwards.  French, Spanish and British settlements all existed here at one time, and the various remains can still be seen from each of these periods.

San Carlos (approximately 2 hours drive from Stanley)
This is the site of the British landings in 1982. Visitors can view the war cemetery and museum.  The site offers varied wildlife and beautiful scenery.

Volunteer Point (approximately 3 hours drive from Stanley)
The main attraction at Volunteer Point is the King Penguin colony which resides there throughout the year; Gentoo & Magellanic penguins also breed here.  This site is usually only accessible from early November until late March. .
