Darwin House is one of the Falklands' foremost guest houses, set in picturesque and historical Darwin Settlement on the isthmus between the north and south of East Falkland Islands. Owners Ken and BonnieGreenland have successfully run Darwin House for the past ten years and greatly enjoyed welcoming visitors to the beautiful settlement. On selling the property, they hope to support the new owners by offering independent guided wildlife and battlefield tours. Speaking of the settlement’s history Ken said, “Darwin was once the largest settlement after Stanley, with almost 200 working people on the payroll.” Named after Charles Darwin, who spent some time in the Falklands during his travels, the settlement was established in 1859 as a centre for cattle ranching and later for sheep farming. By 1920 the site had become too small for the thriving settlement and over the following two years all the farm buildings, the church and most of the houses, were transferred over the hill Goose Green, now owned by Falkland Landholdings. Darwin was also at the centre of one of the bloodiest battles of the 1982 Falklands War. British forces fought through Darwin and on to Darwin Hill before retaking Goose Green Settlement from Argentine Forces. Just over twenty five years later, activities at Darwin are much less dramatic and a lot more fun; fishing, walking, boating and golfing are popular pastimes for relaxed Darwin House guests. Darwin also provides an ideal base for the exploration of Lafonia and the eastern shore of Falkland Sound. The settlement is situated conveniently close to Mount Pleasant Airport, home of approximately 2000 members of Her Majesty’s Forces. |
