Independent Travel

If you wish, you can make all your own arrangements to travel to and around the Falklands for a land-based holiday. Start by checking the entry and exit requirements page and please note that you must have pre-booked accommodation. This can be anywhere in the Islands but make sure that you will be able to reach your accommodation easily upon arrival (e.g. An outer island and West Falkland will require an internal flight so a stop-over on East Falkland may be necessary for your first night.)

International flights are either from Brize Norton, Oxfordshire, England or via Chile. The By Air section has information about these routes and how to book. Falkland Islands Tours and Travel run a bus service from Mount Pleasant Airport to Stanley. This is the only way to travel into Stanley unless you have made private, prior arrangements with a taxi company. It is advisable to book this bus journey in advance. Some driver-guides and accommodation providers will collect you from Mount Pleasant if your first night is not arranged for Stanley but it is important to clarify these arrangements before arrival.

The next step is to organise accommodation. Falkland Travel Agents can make all these arrangements for you if you wish. Alternatively, use the Accommodation section to identify the places you'd like to stay. It is very likely that you will travel around the Island using the Falkland Islands Government Air Service (FIGAS). Before making contact with accommodation providers, check the Internal Flights Falkland Islands Government Air Service (FIGAS) page and the map to organise an itinerary that will make the best of the FIGAS shuttle service and minimise flight times. Internal flights are "zoned" into three "shuttle" areas, the northern, southern and east-west shuttle (these details are shown on the Travel – Getting Around the Falklands). Link together places in the same zone to save unnecessary routing through Stanley. Alternatively, have a look at our itinerary suggestions.

As soon as your accommodation is booked, make contact with FIGAS and ensure that transfers can be provided for the dates you require. At all locations outside Stanley, accommodation providers will meet you on arrival at the airstrip; there is no need to worry about any onward travel. From Stanley airport, a taxi can easily be arranged to transfer you into the town.

If you wish to travel overland rather than by air, use the map, check hire car or driver-guide availability well in advance of your arrival.
