Food & Eating Out

Island-wide, Falkland hosts pride themselves in serving locally produced foods including home-made cakes and biscuits for the traditional "smoko"; with home-grown vegetables and meat reared on the farm or locally caught fish at meal times.

With ample menus to choose from at eating establishments in Stanley the taste buds will be truly fulfilled. The quality of the local seafood is excellent, with a variety of dishes to whet the appetite - featuring mussels, oysters, scallops and crab as well as local seatrout and Atlantic Rock cod (locally called mullet) served in most restaurants while some of the smaller cafes and pubs offer the familiar fayre of fish and chips during the day. A visit to the Falklands would not be complete without sampling the delights of the local squid caught in deep waters, or the Patagonian toothfish (Mero).

The Falklands are home to delicious organic meat and are famed for lamb, mutton and beef dishes, all of which has been reared on the wide plains of the Falkland Islands. Upland Goose paté is a local speciality. These dishes are further enhanced by the flavours from the very fresh and locally grown vegetables, or perhaps combined with the unique Diddle-dee Berry or Teaberry.

As the evening falls the restaurants of Stanley start to bustle as local people and visitors enjoy an evening out and an opportunity to socialise. With friendly waiting staff, a good choice of wines in many of the eating establishments and the range of dishes, including imaginative options for vegetarians, dining out is a real pleasure.
